Cathedral of San Gimignano and Museum of Sacred Art Combo Ticket

The Cathedral, or Duomo, is without a doubt one of the most important monuments of San Gimignano. The walls of the Basilica Santa Maria Assunta are entirely covered with frescoes that tell stories of the New and Old Testaments. These frescoes were painted by illustrious painters of the Sienese School of the 14th century, by Bartolo di Fredi and the Memmi workshop.

Inside the Cathedral, the Chapel of Santa Fina is one of the main Renaissance jewels thanks to the work of famous Florentine artists. The altar was created by the sculptor Benedetto da Maiano, the frescoes of the life of the saint by Domenico Ghirlandaio. Saint Fina is San Gimignano's favorite saint. Legend has it that she was afflicted with a serious illness as a little girl, and chose to spend the rest of her days lying on a wooden board. At the moment of her death, yellow violets blossomed from the board. Every year in March, the violets of Santa Fina blossom abundantly amidst the hard stone of the towers that give this medieval city its famous skyline.

The adjoining Museum of Sacred Art was created in 1915. It has recently been reorganized and includes works of art from convents, the Duomo and from churches of the area. The display exhibits remarkable paintings, sculptures, earthenware, partially preserved funerary monuments, bas-reliefs, textiles, and silverware.

Two wooden sculptures dating from the 14th century stand out among the collection - the Annunciation Angel and a Madonna of which only the head and the shoulders remain. Other special exhibition pieces are the illuminated psalm books and antiphonaries by Niccolò di Ser Sozzo and Lippo Vanni. The Madonna of the Rose, part of a triptych by Bartolo di Fredi, is particularly loved by the inhabitants of San Gimignano.
